Sculptor, printmaker and playwright, Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) was born outside of Hamburg and spent most of his life in the small village of Gustrow in Mecklenburg. 'Human beings' were Barlach's theme throughout life as he expressed the joys of life as well as effects of poverty, hunger and war through his art and literary work. What is unique about his sculptures is that he used wood, which hadn't been done since the Middle Ages in Europe.
57 sculptures, including 12 wooden works out of the 100 that he made in his lifetime, 75 sketches, 36 prints and other reference material will be displayed to introduce the full scope of his work.
There will be a lecture to the title of "Between Heaven and Earth - Barlach and Art" by Yuko Ikeda from the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto on June 18th 14:00-. Gallery talks by curators will be given on June 10th and July 8th 14:00-.
