Rural Drowsiness, Urban Illusion
This event has ended.
At Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts
Media: Drawing, Prints
Known for his unique color expressions in peculiar scenes, Ryusei Furukawa's wood block prints are a rare breed in this great tradition of Japan. As a result of dynamic color investigations, most of Furukawa's woodcuts were only made into a single print. This exhibition traces Furukawa's changing subject matter over the years, which begins with the rural flora and fauna in his hometown in Hanekawa, and proceeds through various stages ranging from athletes, urban depictions of street corners in Ginza, and ultimately to a conglomeration of characters and settings.
Furukawa's creativity has inspired many woodblock artists over the years. Nearly 170 of his prints will be on display.
