This is an exhibition of 45 paintings, 74 sketches and 7 prints by Paula Modersohn-Becker, the artist who led the German Expressionism movement before dying at the young age of 31. 36 other works by artists from the famed artists' colony at Worpswede, North Germany, will also be displayed.
Modersohn-Becker was born in 1876 in Dresden. She studied art in London, Berlin and Paris, where she was heavily influenced by the styles of Cezanne, Gaugin and Matisse.
At the end of the 19th century, the art colony in Worpswede held such greats such as the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, painter Fritz Mackensen, who was her mentor, sculptor Clara Westhoff, who was her best friend, and painter Otto Modersohn, her future husband.

From JR Utsunomiya Station or Tobu Utsunomiya Station, take the Kanto-Bus for Sakusingakuin-Komanyu. Get off at Sakuradori-Jumonji.
