Yuichi Inoue "Four Character Calligraphy Scrolls"
This event has ended.
At Unac Tokyo
Media: Calligraphy
The 1965 book "Calligraphy and the Contemporary" was the first of its kind to question the nature of new calligraphy. Yuichi Inoue is recognised as one of the calligraphers who differed from the artists who searched for the beauty of calligraphy in classical calligraphy, and "discovered his own aesthetic from within himself and created works from it."
In the book's conclusion "The True Nature of Chinese Character Calligraphy and its Future" it states that "a word such as 'idiot' could never become art.' Common sense would lead one to agree, however, when writing about the tragedy of the firebombing of Tokyo, in the spring of 1969 Inoue drew out the four characters for the word 'idiot.' It is hoped that people will come to see these solemn four characters, which draw you into a dark world.
