Marc Chagall "Les Fables de La Fontaine"
This event has ended.
At Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art
Media: Illustration, Painting
In "Les Fables" by 17th century French poet Jean de La Fontaine, short stories featuring various animals teach us about human ego, human stupidity and life's lessons. It is a classic literary work that all French know. Ever since the first edition came out in 1668, many artists have created illustrations for "Les Fables".
The artist of love and dreams, Marc Chagall (1887-1985), is one of them. He was commisioned to create a series by the art dealer Ambrose Vollard.
All 100 works from the "Les Fables de La Fontaine" series at Kochi Prefectural Art Museum will be exhibited in two parts: 3/21-5/7 and 5/9-6/11. The illustrations from the first edition of Francois Chauveau's "Les Fables", works of the same subject by other artists in the 17-20th century, and forty paintings featuring scenes from "Aesops Fables" will also be on display.
