Faith and Syncretism: Saicho and Treasures of Tendai

Tokyo National Museum
Finished
Saicho (766-822), posthumously known as Dengyo Daishi ("Great Teacher who Transmitted the Teachings"), established the Tendai Sect in Japan in 806 (Enryaku 25), under the imperial sanction of Emperor Kanmu.
In celebrating 1,200 years since the founding of the Tendai Sect, this exhibition presents many treasures from Enryaku-ji, the Tendai headquarters on Mount Hiei, and from other Tendai temples throughout Japan. This definitive exhibition of Tendai art will introduce the vast range of Tendai's belief system in the Lotus Sutra, the Pure Land of the Buddha Amida, esotericism, and the Sanno- Shinto deities. This exhibition also presents several honzon main images, which will be exhibited for the first time outside their temples, and recently discovered works from a survey of more than sixty Tendai temples in Kyoto conducted over a period of a year and a half.
