Ninagawa, a young photographer active in the magazine and advertising worlds, photographs man-made flowers made for cemeteries. In places that have strong sunlight, such as Mexico, Guam and Saigon, there is the custom of putting fake flowers on graves and Ninagawa has repeatedly travelled around the world to photograph them since she encountered them for the first time. Shot in close-up, these brightly coloured flowers look as though they are real, and yet viewers eventually realize that they are made of material and when they see the image of the Virgin Mary, they understand that the location is a cemetery.
