Revived Meiji Architecture - Repair work on Tokyo National Museum's Hyokeikan Gallery

Tokyo National Museum
Finished
Designed by Katayama Tokuma and known as the "building to express joy", the Hyokeikan was created in 1900 for the celebration of Emperor Taisho's marriage. The Tokyo National Museum (formerly the Tokyo Imperial Household Museum) was appointed for the building's care and maintenance after the building was presented to the Imperial Household following its completion in 1908. The building was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1978, noted as a typical example of Western style architecture from the late Meiji period.

In the near century since its completion, the Hyokeikan has deteriorated. It was closed last year to repair leaks in the roof and other areas that were in need of attention. These repairs have now been completed, and the public is again free to view its renovated interiors. Computer screens will show an overview of the repair work, as well as the original plans and drawings of the Hyokeikan and its history.
