"Shaping Faith: Japanese Ichiboku Buddhist Statues" Exhibition

This exhibition is focussing on Japan's tradition of Ichiboku statues, presenting examples from the Nara and Heian periods those of the Edo artists Enku and Mokujiki,

There will be 146 Ichiboku statues on display, including the Juichimen Kannon (Ekadasamukha, National Treasure, Douganji Kannondo, Kogenji, Shiga Prefecture, on show from November 7th to December 3rd, 2006), which is being exhibited outside of its home for the first time.

The exhibition is divided into 4 sections in chronological order: "Sandalwood Sculpture", "Single-block Sculpture", "Hatchet Carving", and "Enku and Mokujiki".
