4th Japan Photographers' Association Public Works Exhibition

Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography

This event has ended.

For the 17th Japanese Photographers' Association exhibition, 200 works by its members will be on display. This is also the fourth time that there has been a nationwide call for photo submissions, out of which 100 of the award winning works will also be exhibited.

I knew it would not be fair to compare this exhibition to the work of master Eikoh Hosoe or the thematic show on collage and photomontage shown on the other two floors of the museum, so I went to see the Japan Photographers' Association show first.

There I got the usual bulk of poppy colors, pretty scenery, pseudo-humanist travel portraiture, and, more surprisingly, a lot of «cliché» Japanese imagery. Only here and there did I find the exceptional display of humour, or a bit of experimentation.

Over all, a nice, but uninspiring, catalogue. Yawn. At least it was free.
