"Designing a lifestyle for the days to come"

Setagaya Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Taisaku Cho, Gan Hosoya, Yabuki Nobuhiko
As the rapid economic growth of the 1960s produced a consumer society in Japan, design and illustration emerged as important fields representative of the new age. Since then, their development has run in parallel with the "pure arts" of painting and sculpture. Design and illustration have become forms of individual expression. Designers and illustrators are treated as leaders of contemporary society, artists in their own right, and the barrier between art and design erected during the age of modernism seems to have been obliterated. In recent years, design is being reconsidered as a means of creating an entire lifestyle rather than dealing only with the form of objects.
This exhibition traces the careers of Daisaku Choh, Gan Hosoya, and Novhiko Yabuki, three leading figures in the world of design. They belong to different generations and have different areas of expertise. While developing original styles based on their own individual awareness and ways of approaching design, they have explored and established new standards of artistic creation that take their work beyond fashion and novelty. This presentation of the work of these three designers will provide new insights into their creative activities and at the same time give a better understanding of the impact of design on our lives.
