Teppey Ujiyama
This retrospective exhibition retraces the career of Teppey Ujiyama, a pioneer of abstract painting in Japanese modern art history. For this first show in Tokyo in 30 years, his studio was recreated in the museum's gallery space. The idea came from his will to allow public viewing of his workspace.
Ujiyama was born in Hita, Oita Prefecture. The city was known for its quiet and picturesque nature and landscape. Determined to become an artist since his early age, he self-taught himself woodcut printing techniques and began to create actively at the age of 20. While keeping various jobs to support himself, he kept exhibiting at the Kokuten. After the war, he explored abstract painting with geometric forms and custom paints made with crystal powder. Ujiyama's goal was to establish his own world of mesmerizing beauty in order to transcend time and space.
