At the initiative of the photographer Balthasar Burkhard, the latter's Japanese colleague explores the Swiss Alps. The artist Naoya Hatakeyama captures the beauty of the moutain landscape with his camera, but he also follows the trail of his countrymen with an ironic eye. Burkhard, for his part, discovers the Japanese forests and mountains, and coaxes mythic visual resonances from them in his somber black-and-white photographs. The two artists permit one another to turn the gaze of the stranger on their own familiar environments. Without preconceptions, they capture not only the beauty of the mountains, but also cultural chasms that elude the camera in their own countries.
Balthasar Burkhard and Naoya Hatakeyama are among the leading exponents of the art of photography in their respective countries. "Two Moutains" will bear witness to their respective perception and artistic expression of their host country's mountains - differing in shape, vegetation, and mythological associations from the mountains they are used to at home.
Naoya Hatakeyama is among Japan's most prominent contemporary artists. His photographs work wonders with perspective and establish an astonishingly close bound between photography and its object. Hatakeyama will be showing new photographs as well as a few drawings, all having the Swiss moutains as their topic.
One of the best-know Swiss photographers, Balthasar Burkhard is widely recognized for his objective photography and its mastery at mediating the physical aspects of the world and the photographic matter. "Two Moutains" will feature approximately 35 new photographs by Burkhard, focusing on Japanese mountainous regions around Kumano and Lake Koya.
The resulting common exhibitions - first in Japan, then in Switzerland - promise to be fascinating.

Due to the particularities of the Tokyo Art Museum site, the two photographers will show their work in succession.
Balthasar Burkhard's works will be shown from 7 April to 28 May, 2006,
Naoya Hatakeyama's works will be shown from 2 June to 7 July, 2006.
