The art scene in the United States has recently begun to regain its momentum with the emergence of street subculture. Led by Barry McGee, the artists are from a generation that grew up on Japanese manga and 1960s psychedelia. Two Brooklyn-based artists will display their take on subculture for this exhibition.
Misaki Kawai (1978-), a graduate of Kyoto University of Art and Design, traveled to Turkey, Nepal and Thailand before settling down in New York. She will fill the gallery space with countless drawings on coarse paper, 3D works with fabrics and cutouts, huge installations with fuzzy cotton and fabrics - immersing the viewer in her world of 'boroboro'. A feeling of fuzziness in her uncomplicated drawings creates a softness that can be found in all of her works.
Taylor McKimens (1976-) understands Japanese subculture better than most Japanese and incorporates it into his art. His sense of wonder is probably similiar to what we felt forty years ago when we first saw Disney characters and Popeye. His work consists of installations of cutouts of paper colored with markers. At first glance, they look dirty and 'dorodoro', but a closer look reveals the beauty of their colors and finish. McKimens's work will always surprise you - a simple-looking work will actually contain such details as the leg hairs of a middle-aged man, or a 3D work might actually be paper folded into the shape of a cactus.
