Tsuizen Ukiyoe Exhibition

From the end of the Edo Period to the Meiji Period, whenever a kabuki actor died an ukiyoe painting of his likeliness was made as an announcement of his death. They were called "Shini-e", or "death paintings".
Taken mainly from the collection of the late Yoshikazu Hayashi, a prominent researcher of Edo culture, 150 pieces of work will be shown in this exhibition, including 'shini-e' and paintings from when the actor was alive.

There will be a gallery talk from 15:00- every Wednesday and on July 28th and August 10th.
