Already 5 years have passed since the attacks of September 11th 2001, and this spring marks the 3rd year since the war with Iraq began. Scarred by the 9/11 terrorist attacks and fuelled by the desire for revenge, America was not reassured by its war with Afghanistan and pursued the toppling of Saddam Hussein's regime, leaving the Middle East in an unstable, volatile state which threatens world politics. Together with this, the servile Japanese government supports the United States and sends in the Self Defence Force, ignoring the constitution in the name of politics. With Prime Minister Koizumi's visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, he has brought nothing but repulsion from fellow Asian countries and has stirred up Anti-Japaneseness. Japan is turning its back on its own history and treading down the road of right wing political tendencies.
How should Japanese people deal with this world we live in? We are part of a society which now embraces the idea of fighting wars for peace and the destruction that it involves.
The artists in this series of exhibitions are attempting to clear new ground in addressing and giving expression to these issues.
