Miho Shirai "Finding Shangri-La"

Miho Shirai
In a style reminiscent of Tibetan Buddhism, Miho Shirai exhibits landscapes-themed tapestries, handmade tents and flags. While the theme of this exhibition is 'shangri-la', the works convey a sense of nitty-gritty reality. The promised land signifies a home for the spirit.
Since the late 80's, Shirai's work has consisted mainly of sculptures and installations using industrial materials, everyday items and photographs. Creating new meanings and novel sensations through different mixtures and arrangements of those components has been a long time theme of hers. Lately, she has been incorporating fabrics to create a more colorful and natural world.
Also an active participant in many projects and festivals around the world, she was involved last year in a project that displayed flags 'of the heart' near the UN building in New York. Concepts from that project developed into new works for this exhibition.
