Jason Teraoka
This exhibition showcases Teraoka’s latest work: a series of 88 paintings entitled "Neighbor". Born and presently based in Hawaii, since the mid-1990s, Teraoka has exhibited throughout Hawaii where he has garnered much attention from collectors, curators and other artists. As a fourth-generation Japanese-American, Teraoka possesses an affinity with Japanese artists. He collaborated with Yoshitomo Nara in 2005 in the exhibition entitled Shaka Nara at The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu. The current exhibition at the Hara Museum is his first solo exhibition in Japan.

In the "Neighbor" series, Teraoka has created what appears to be freeze-framed scenes taken from his everyday life, inspired by television, magazines or vintage horror and suspense films (by Hitchcock, etc.). He makes use of chance juxtapositions in a process he calls “channel surfing.” Intimate in scale and often dark in feeling, Teraoka’s compositions are studies of uneasiness and wavering emotion. In his characters--people on the edge of desperation, losers, people full of self pity--Teraoka satirizes the society that has produced them, even as he imbues their depiction with a sense of compassion. The people that Teraoka draws look as if they are puzzling over a riddle. Their ambiguous expressions can be construed as a smile or a frown, possibly suggesting the existence of multiple interpretations for every context or situation. Teraoka draws the viewers into his world by placing his subjects into meaning-laden contexts that make us wonder what is happening and what will happen next. Teraoka does not limit his images to a unique narrative, allowing each viewer to add his or her own analysis or interpretation.

The exhibition is being held concurrently with the selections from the Hara Museum’s Permanent Collection featuring the Hara Museum’s latest acquisitions.
