At the Base of a Tower Under Construction - Life in the late 1950s

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum
Finished
The scene is Tokyo Tower under construction at the beginning of 1955. How did the families who ran independent businesses at the base of the tower - so symbolic of the new age - respond to the arrival of television, fridges, washing machines, and other such electrical appliances? Using real objects from the time, along with sound recordings and lighting, scenes portraying family life in the postwar period have been recreated.
