Koichiro Kondo (1884-1962) studied western painting at Tokyo Art School, where Tsuguhara Fujita and Taro Okamoto's father Ippei were among his peers. After graduation, Ippei Okamoto started working for the Asahi Shimbun newspaper using manga as his reporting medium, while Kondo drew manga and illustrations for the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper; the two of them selling well for their style of short, humourous "manga scribblings". They are known for having produced manga versions of Natsume Soseki's novels "Botchan" and "I am a Cat".
This exhibition, taking place 120 years after his birth, introduces visitors to 120 of the oil paintings of Kondo's early period, to the watercolours of his later years, as well as 30 paintings by his contemporaries and long-term friends Usen, Ryuko and Tsunetomo.
