Hiroshi Mizutani
This is the 100th anniversary celebration of art directing pioneer Hiroshi Mizutani's birth. Design art and belongings that were donated to the Film Center will be displayed.
Hiroshi Mizutani(1906-71) joined Shochiku Kamata Studio after graduating from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. It is said that he worked in the movie sets of Kiyohiko Ushihara, Shiro Toyoda, Yasujiro Ozu, Hiroshi Shimizu, and Torajiro Saito in his early years as a movie set operator. After moving to Kyo-Cine and Shinko Cinema, his work in Kenji Mizoguchi's "Gionsai" and Minoru Murata's "Foghorn" gained attention for its meticulous detail. He defined the beauty of periodic films set in the Meiji Era with the Geido Series. Other accalaimed work include "The Life of Oharu" and "The Chikamatsu Story".
Mizutani's sets were a crucial element in what we now call "Mizoguchi Art", which is receiving international interest these days.
