Alpine Air - Swiss Art inspired by Mountains

The “Alpine Air” exhibition, curated by Beat Wismer and organised in close cooperation by the Aargauer Kunsthaus (Aargau Museum of Fine Arts) in Switzerland and the Bunkamura Museum in Tokyo, focuses on a typically Swiss motif: mountains. All through the ages, Switzerland has understood itself as a country of mountains, which have profoundly influenced its culture, myths and self-awareness.
Mountains nearly always show up when the country advertises itself. The exhibition also provides a representative overview of Swiss fine art from the end of the 18th century - when artists, scientists and tourists began to discover the mountains for their purposes - up to the 1920s. Thus the first part of the exhibition ranges from the Age of Enlightenment and the Pre-romantics to Expressionism. A second section shows how the specific Swiss theme of mountains has been dealt with pictorially in the past few decades, revealing a great variety of artistic methods and media. The younger generation of Swiss artists tends to approach the image of mountains as a cliché of pristine Swiss perfection in a critical and often ironic fashion.
