Ben Shahn (1898-1969) is a representative painter of the American art from the 1930's until the 1960's. Born in a Jewish family in Kaunas, Lithuania, he moved with his family to New York at age 8. At 13, he started as an apprentice in a lithograph atelier. Later, he went on to study painting and engraving at several art schools such as the Art Student League. In the early 1930's, he came for the first time under the spotlights with a series of paintings dedicated to the "wrongfully accused": the "Dreyfus Affair" or the "Sacco and Vanzetti Case".
The rest of his carreer was dedicated to raising social issues such as poverty, discrimination or oppression. But these works, permeated with humanism, were not a loud cry for justice but rather whispers talking to us in silent ways. This humanism and love for his subjects was conveyed by his masterful brush skills, skills that have since then inspired generations of graphic artists.
