Japanese books have taken on various forms such as scrolls, Orimoto, and pamphlets. Scrolls have often been used for stories or travelogues, and Orimoto for Kyo (Buddhist scriptures). Pamphlets were first brought to Japan during the Muromachi Era from China’s Ming Dynasty in the Soutei (threaded, double-leaved book) form, and the technique has continued to be the basic way to create Japanese books. In these days though, with the development and flourishing of Western books that can be mass-produced, we have few encounters with books made using traditional Japanese techniques.

In this exhibition, the museum has chosen 15 titles comprising 136 total works that are threaded in the traditional Japanese style or that have a uniquely Japanese color combination and usage of Japanese materials and expressions. Among the works are books made of "chirimen" (Japanese crepe paper), issues of the craft movement magazine "Kogei" made of regional washi paper, and foreign books expressed with Japanese-style illustrations and "tanka" poems.
