Hiromi Watanabe
1968 was a year that shook the world with the escalation of the Vietnam war, the assignations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, and the student protests in Paris. In 1968, Hiromi Watanabe was walking the streets of Shinjuku with a camera, stopping now and then to take pictures of pubs. Then, there was a huge anti-war protest near Shinjuku Station on the night of October 21st. For the public, who only knew of the Vietnam war though the Japanese media, the seriousness of the situation became clear with the image of searchlights, police helmets and student protesters. Around this time, Watanabe became a student at Tokyo University, and photographing the student protests on campus became a decisive moment for him. Nearly 40 years have passed since these events, and the participants memory of the time becomes more and more distant, but this exhibition of photographs presents a new record of these turbulent times.

Approximately 40-50 black and white photographs.
