Ryusei Kishida is among modern Japan's representative Yo-ga (western style painting) painters and is known for a wide range of works including those with his beloved daughter Reiko as the model. In his short 38-year life (1891-1929), he left many impressionable works exploring distinctiveness of modern Japanese painting. He studied oil painting under Seiki Kuroda and became attracted to the post-impressionist styles of Van Gogh and Cezanne through the influence of literary coterie magazine "Shirakaba (white birch), and was also later influenced by Durer's Northern Renaissance paintings. He changed his style completely during the later half of the Taisho era, however, and becomes more aware of oriental beauty.

This exhibition draws mainly on works from the collection of Kasama Nichido Art Museum and covers this artist's entire life. He left an enormous number of portraits of friends and acquaintances. These and bound works (soutei-ga) of Reiko will be on display in an exhibition totaling approximately 120 works.
