Kiyonaga Torii
Kiyonaga Torii (1752-1815) is one of the representative Ukiyoe painters from the Tenmei era (1781-89) of the Edo period. The beautiful, tall women in his paintings came to be known as the "Venus of Tenmei", assuring Torii's status as a leading Ukiyoe portrait painter along with Utamaro Kitagawa.

This period is also when Kyoka (comic short poems) and Sharepon (comedy literature) started to appear. The publication industry began to grow and lavish multi-colored prints became popular.

This exhibition include 270 masterpieces mainly focusing on portraits of beautiful women by Torii, in addition to his early works, sketches, and printed books, gathered from all over Japan and abroad.
