Masao Tsuruoka
Artist Masao Tsuruoka (1907-1979) who was born in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture has always been involved deeply with the times and society and continued to question what human beings are. Starting with the prewar NOVA Arts Association period, his dizzying transfiguration of painting style and unique way of life continued to attract attention to his existence as a postwar Western painting prodigy. His activities in the newcomer artists' patrons' association that he started together with Shunsuke Matsumoto and Aimitsu as the war intensified, his post-war activity in versatile fields, and his exchanges with author Yukio Mishima and film director Nagisa Oshima are famous as episodes that color his life as a societal outlaw. At the root of Tsuruoka's unique painting style of sharp satire adrift in sweet and humorous eroticism is his earnest effort to ceaselessly observe people, and to recognize humanity.
This exhibition celebrates 100 years since the artist's birth, and features a total of 157 works including his oil paintings, pastels, rough sketches and sculptures. 6 years into the 21st century the gallery revisits Tsuruoka's works through which he relentlessly pursued the conflicting reality surrounding people from the pre-war to post-war periods.
