Artists

Norihiko Saito
Born in 1957, this artist is active as a master artist of modern Nihonga (Japanese style painting). His work was first selected for a Soga-kai award in 1976 while he was a student at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and "Shaman Moon" won the award for outstanding performance at the 1989 Yamatane Museum competition. The semi-3D experimental work with glued wood pieces attracted much attention for its sense of a longing for animism. He has been active as one of the master Japanese artists of the next generation and his 1993 work "Nachi" (MoMAT collection) was critically acclaimed for its modern intellect expressed through a space through the center. He has also won multiple Soga-kai awards and was dispatched to London as a researcher for the Agency for Cultural Affairs from 1995-1996. At this time he started producing the "Water Land" series and "Luminous" series, using new techniques to express the Japanese landscape and winter light. The primordial atmosphere extant invisibly in nature can be felt in these works that are at the forefront of the modern Nihon-ga field that is constantly becoming more diverse.
