Motohiro Tomii "How to Make the World"

Media: Installation
Motohiro Tomii's "How to Make the World" is an ambitious installation that allows viewers to review his past works, while also exploring the next stage of his work. Tomii has continuously created works that possess a sense of being enveloped within an odd tranquility, through his utilization of common materials that are found in our daily lives. In the same way that postmodernists praised the cargo cult of the Melanesians, Tomii has adopted a consistent attitude of using familiar objects for completely different purposes than their original use. But for this exhibition, he has created an installation that seems to be disclosing the production process of his work, rather than a work that is its own concrete, physical existence. Following Tomii's instructions, our individual minds are led to construct familiar objects that follow different purposes than their ordinary usages. We then naturally become convinced that it is we ourselves who create the world in which we live.
