Toshiyuki Konishi
Toshiyuki Konishi was born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1980. Now 27 years old, for the graduation exhibition at Musashino Art University in January this year, he built a hut in the exhibition space, in and around which he created differing spaces and exhibited paintings. The intensity of his expression and the force of his compositions attracted a great deal of attention.

Dealing with the notion of ‘portraiture’ in his painting, Toshiyuki Konishi uses photographs of his family as a reference, in order to draw a link between motif and motive. However, the people depicted have their eyes, noses and mouths painted in red, and their hair completely white, making it impossible to discern their race, age, sex, or any other essential information that would allow us to get a sense of who they are. These figures sometimes have bemused expressions on their faces, seeming to float on the painting’s wavy, meandering brushstrokes and color. It is just as if they are floating on the sea of memory, never ceasing to stimulate the viewer’s imagination.

For the “House of Human” exhibition, Arataniurano will be presenting a simple display of Konishi’s new work, while from December 1 (Sat) to 15 (Sat), his much talked-about hut-like installation from his graduation exhibition will be displayed at Magic Room? in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa.
