Marlene Dumas
Born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1953, Marlene Dumas studied art at the University of Cape Town and moved to the Netherlands in 1967 and she is currently based in Amsterdam. In the 1970s, she joined "Atelier 63" in Haarlem, Netherlands, and started creating collages consisting of newspaper cutouts, old pictures and text. However, since 1983, she has been making paintings, producing nude figure paintings and a series of figurative paintings in which human faces cover most of her canvas. The focus of much international attention, she is one of the most remarkable contemporary artists working today.

The faces and nude figures she depicts in her paintings are derived from religious imagery, fashion magazines, and her own snapshots. She says that she is not imitating these images, just using them. What catches her attention is not the meaning or significance of each image, but the concept of the face; despite the subject's race, sexuality, age, or level of fame, everything is portrayed as equal in her works. Her expressionistic style and technique makes all the differences even more ambiguous. The staring eyes of figures in her paintings are more striking than the color of skin, and convey a sense of anxiety and resistance.

This exhibition features her drawings and oil paintings from 1987 to her recent works made in 2007.
