Seiki Kuroda (1866-1924) moved to France in order to study Law, but started to become interested in painting and subsequently became a painter rather than a lawyer. He received his academic art training from Raphael Collin.

When Kuroda returned to Japan in 1893, the world of Japanese Western-style painting was undergoing great changes. Kuroda's light-filled paintings differed from the then-popular Barbizon School style of painting. Becoming a professor at art school and establishing the Hakuba-kai group of painters, Kuroda was a central figure in the world of academic painting, and in later years took on the roles of art administrator.

As a retrospective of this figure who was so important to Japanese painting and ar administration, this exhibition presents Kuroda's most well-known paintings ("Lakeside" and others) as well as other materials from the collection of the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties.

There will be 80 oil paintings and 60 sketches, as well as other materials.
