Le Corbusier's impact on Japanese architecture and design was significant in both the pre- and post-war periods. In this four-part lecture series, Japanese architects draw on their personal experiences to talk about his influence and legacy. All events below have Japanese-English and Japanese sign language simultaneous interpretation.

No.1 - Fumihiko Maki: “Talking about Le Corbusier”
The young Fumihiko Maki met Le Corbusier at Chandigarh―the city that Le Corbusier designed and built in India―in a meeting that sparked an ongoing interest. Maki has contributed a description of Le Corbusier's influence on Japanese architecture for the exhibition catalog, and will talk at length on Le Corbusier moderated by Tominaga Yuzuru, an architect who is Maki's close associate and who has often discussed Le Corbusier with him.

No.2 - Tadao Ando: “Me, Le Corbusier and Residential Architecture”
Ando Tadao describes the many ways that Le Corbusier has influenced his own architecture. Observing that "the whole essence of Le Corbusier's mastery is packed into his housing," in 2001 Ando and his students at Tokyo University fabricated and exhibited more than 100 models of Le Corbusier's residential architecture. Ando will share his thoughts and explain the attraction of this architect who has engendered such a fond respect.

In 2000, Arata Isozaki published a book entitled "Who Is Le Corbusier?" and may well be the architect who has said the most about Le Corbusier in Japan. He has contributed an essay in praise of Le Corbusier for the exhibition catalogue. Isozaki will talk about Le Corbusier's relevance to us today, including references to his work as a thinker.

No.4 - Kisho Kurokawa: “Le Corbusier's Spirit and The Modern”
Kisho Kurokawa will talk about the extent of Le Corbusier's influence. In 1989, Kurokawa worked with university architecture departments around Japan to produce and exhibit 22 models of Le Corbusier's architecture, 20 of which are included in the current exhibition. In line with the title, "Le Corbusier's Spirit and The Modern," he will describe Le Corbusier's legacy, explaining why he is still relevant for us today.
