The exhibition's title "Tougen" comes from the image of Xanadu. Pictures expressing Utopia have been drawn in various media. In today's society where values have diversified and the word "ideal" has become obsolete to begin with, perhaps there is no such thing as "utopia". At the same time, stereotypical, manufactured versions of our "ideals" are available all around; human beings' ideals have transformed into those of space development, genetic science and the world of computers. Yearnings to reach out have become internalized and entrapped, finally wrapped up in a sense of even stronger uneasiness.

Artists have portrayed animals that live in other worlds in all times and places. Fusing these living beings with each other has given birth to such creations as dragons, phoenixes and sphinxes; the possibilities seem unlimited, partly driven by scientific and industrial needs. As information and knowledge in society overflow and become entangled, new truths and values emerge: the paintings in this exhibition aim to take a look at human beings from a new angle by perceiving these new creations in a positive light and expressing them in paintings.
