Artists

Yuji Sakai
Born in 1973, Sakai has been producing unique paintings with traditional materials and methods since graduating from the Faculty of Japanese Art at Musashino Art University. Last year, he was chosen for the Artist in Residence program by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

His works are black and white, as he aims to emphasize the texture of the materials he uses rather than visual elements such as colour. In the past, he has produced works with soil, cardboard and stones stuck onto canvas. However, since then he has stopped relying on the materials themselves, and instead has chosen to create images with his own hands, using acrylic paint on cotton. The dynamic strokes look like flowing landscapes, and signify strong 'movements' of the hands and body. This, coupled with the fine details seen in the paintings give an impression of both dynamism and fragility.
