"Manhattan OKINA"

Super Deluxe
Finished
Manhattan Okina has its roots in the ritual performance of Okina, which is today performed in noh theatre but predates it as a Shinto religious rite. Our performance tells the story of three old men who live in Manhattan and reach the end of their lives, where they are greeted by a flower spirit who carries them away to heaven. There they become Okina—respected gods who look after the welfare of people on earth and bring them peace and joy. Our performance is dedicated to George Yuzawa who has long been an important figure in Nisei American society in the United States. Manhattan Okina is a bilingual performance in Japanese and English combining elements of noh theatre, shomyo Buddhist chant and gagaku classical dance and music.
