Many paintings depicting the beauty of four seasons have been created since the ancient times in Japan. Winter scenes depict the harshness of nature as well as the warmth found in signs of spring. After the Meiji period, the European style of painting was introduced to Japan. However, Japanese artists maintained their sensibility and expressed the subtleties of the seasons in various genres of art.

This exhibition presents around 40 paintings and photographs from the museum collections that deal with winter scenes. For example, Kojin Kudo's "Stairs of Butterflies" and Kyujin Yamamoto's "Almost Spring" portray severe winter scenes, and Hiroshi Hanatani's "Yukiguni" (snow country) series are photographs showing the lifestyles of people in winter. A wide range of works from Nihonga, oil painting, to photography will be on display.
