Miranda Lichtenstein Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Gallery Min Min
Media: Photography
The still life photographs that comprise this show continue to reveal Lichtenstein's interest in failed systems, in particular typological systems that fail to tame nature. Printed from polaroids through a digital transfer process that engenders subtle shifts of color and saturation in the final image, the photographs present a vibrant array of plant and flowers set against backdrops of misaligned and slightly disoriented shadows. Lichtenstein chose these ordinary weeds and garden rejects specifically for the shape and form of shadows they would cast, which she paints onto watercolor paper before she positions and photographs the flora. The resulting images, combining photographic and painterly techniques, subtly destabilize the traditional still-life format, thereby mystifying the certainty of photography by aligning it with more ambiguous painting traditions.
