"Ruikou and Teisuke, Warriors of Words" Exhibition

Newspark - The Japan Newspaper Museum
Finished
Two adventurers caused an uproar in the newspaper world during the third decade of the Meiji era. Their names were Ruika Kuroiwa of "Yorozuchouhou" newspaper and Teisuke Akiyama of "Nirokushinpou" newspaper. They had colorful personalities and were rivals who vied for supremacy in what today's society calls "Page Three" news or scandal reporting. Their methods were to create campaigns about society's miscellaneous affairs to spread to the masses. These "warriors of words" who believed in the power of words boldly callenged wealth and power in the Tokyo of over one hundred years ago. This exhibit follows the histories of these two newspapers that won popularity in the Meiji era as well as the eventful lives of these two men.
