"Testimony of Self-Portrait" Exhibition

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished
The collection of self-portrait works owned by the University Art Museum at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music has been growing over the years. It contained 190 pieces in the Meiji period, and almost 5000 works today, including many graduation thesis projects.

The self-portrait collection speaks of the history and the truth of the past 100 years. From the Meiji, Taisho, Showa, to Heisei periods, society has changed dramatically, and in each time period, self-portraiture evolves to reflect on the social time frame, and the personal history of the young artists who made them.

This selection of these self-portraits from different time periods evokes a large picture of Japanese modern history, providing clues to understanding the modernization and internationalization of Japanese society.
