Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS) has been focusing on supporting emerging artists through “Tokyo Wonder Wall” (TWW), a public art competition, since 2000, and emerging artists support program. TWS-Emerging is one of the program to realize a solo exhibition for TWW awardees to farther develop their presentational skills. From last year’s TWW awardees, TWS will introduce 23 artists from June till March, 2008.

This year's fourth exhibition comprises Tomohiro Shimizu's "Good Enough to Eat" and Kenji Nagahama's "Flowers on the Precipice."

Today we can enjoy one of the most basic functions of life, eating, in many different ways. Various magazines have special editions on food and introduce table manners and table settings in lavish spreads. Foodstuffs are meticulously wrapped and displayed in storefronts and pre-cooked foods are available all over the city. Eating has become a smooth process that we can take part in without dirtying our hands. The first artist confronts the viewer with the grotesqueness and functionality of the act of "eating," and the arrogance of the eater and the unreasonable reality of the eaten, but using soft colors and lines.

The second artist paints a girl that at one glance has a beautiful, sensitive heart. He depicts the otherworldly existence caused by her strong sensitivity, despite faltering between reason and insanity, purity and evil, universal human dualities that exist in herself as well. This duality is expressed clearly and graphically along with his unique style of embellishment. On the other hand, the girl's image enveloping this duality is expressed vaguely in a world of red - the color of thinned blood.
