Two exceptional series of photographs are on display at the French Institute.
Yosuke Yamahata "Nagasaki Journey"
Yosuke Yamahata was born in Singapore in 1917, brought up by a family that was already very involved in photography. Returning to Japan in 1925 he worked in a family-owned company and then left for Asia as a photographer for the Japanese navy. On August 9th 1945, he was working in the army's press department in Hakata.
Rushing to the scene of the explosion, he arrived in Nagasaki on August 10th 1945 at 3am, accompanied by the artist Eiji Yamada and the writer Jun Higashi. He took 117 photographs with his Leica, which he developed as soon as he returned to Hakata. This series "Nagasaki Journey" is the most extensive photographic documentation of the city immediately after the bombing. Featured in the major newspapers on August 21st and 25th, they were then censored for many years. From 1947 to the end of his life in 1966, he worked only in his family-owned company.
Hiromi Tsuchida "Hiroshima collection"
Born in 1939 in Fukui Prefecture, Tsuchida studied as an engineer and a photographer. He had a successful career and won many prizes for some of his photographic series. His work is in the collection of the Centre Pompidou, the BNF in Paris and the MoMA in New York. As well as having published several books, he is a professor a the General College of Photography in Tokyo. For over 20 years, he has tried to understand what happened in Hiroshima by exploring the event through photography, drawing connections between the past and the present. This has resulted in three series: images of buildings and forgotten parts of the city in "Hiroshima Monument", portraits of the survivors in "Hiroshima 1945-1979" and "Hiroshima Collection", a look at the objects on display in the Hiroshima Peace Museum.
On August 1st (Wed), at 19:00, Tsuchida will present a slide show conference titled "Looking at the faces of the atom bomb victims" which will retrace the history of photography of Nagasaki and Hiroshima from 1945 until today.
This photography exhibition coincides with a series of film screenings, talks and symposiums relating to the atomic bombing. For more details, please see the venue's website (French and Japanese only).
