Nitten is Japan's largest art exhibition based on an open call for submissions. One hundred years have passed since the Meiji government held the first Monten in 1907 in order to promote art in Japan, and the name has changed from Monten to Teiten, to Shinmonten, and to the present day Nitten. This exhibition traces the one hundred year history of the Nitten and features approximately 170 paintings, sculptures, crafts, and calligraphy works. This 4 part exhibition introduces great works of Japanese modern art chronologically. Please see exhibition website for related events.

Part 1: Monten (1907-1918)
One of the biggest national events held in autumn, the Monten (Monbushou Art Exhibition) was considered a gateway for aspiring artists and produced many great art works.

Part 2: Teiten (1919-1934)
The Teiten (Teikoku Bijutsuin Art Exhibition) continued the tradition of the Monten, with a new craft section in addition to the Nihon-ga, Yo-ga and sculpture sections.

Part 3: Shinmonten (1936-1944)
The Shinmonten (New Monbusho Art Exhibition) emerged out of the confusion of the revolutionary Teiten and became known for its diversity of works.

Part 4: Nitten (1944-present)
The Nitten was one of Japan's first post-war art exhibitions and continues to be a place to discover new Japanese masters in art.
