Risaku Suzuki "Kumano, Yuki, Sakura"

Tokyo Photographic Art Museum

Artists

Risaku Suzuki
This exhibition aims to reconsider the true essence of photography through the eye of one of Japan's most active photographers, Risaku Suzuki.

Born in Wakayama Prefecture in 1963, he received the Kimura Ihei Award in 2000 for his work, 'Piles of Time', which featured photographs of such ancient sacred sites as Kumano, that is near his home, Mount Osorezan and others. His 'Sante Victoire' (2004) received high praise for his challenging works that forced people to rethink the concept of photographic vision. He has also been active on the international stage, taking part in a group exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 2003 and holding a solo exhibition in New York in 2006.

His upcoming exhibition will consist of what can be described as his lifework, 'Kumano', his well-known 'Sakura' series and also a new body of work entitled 'Yuki'. His photographs capture a universal symbol while making the viewer realize that time and space are simply an aggregate of the moments we call 'the present'. Oscillating between the universal and the instant, his work resonates perfectly with characteristics inherent in photography.
