Maurice Utrillo "The Poetry of Montmartre"
This event has ended.
At Mitaka City Gallery of Art
Media: Painting
Maurice Utrillo was born in Paris in 1883. He was the illegitimate child of Susanne Valadon who later became Renoir's model, Lautrec's lover and van Gogh's friend and finally got started on her path as an artist when Degas discovered her talent. Utrillo was sent to the countryside in 1896 when his mother got married, and soon developed a dependency on alcohol to escape the loneliness of living alone with his grandmother. His chance to become a painter came when he was going in and out of psychiatric hospitals to treat his alcoholism and a doctor recommended that he started painting. He established his own creative style through self-study and advice from his mother, and his continued search for a unique style brought him from his White Period to his Colorist Period. In this comprehensive exhibition, works from the White Period during which Utrillo "became" Utrillo to his later works will be on display.
