Artists

Rikio Takahashi
This artist was a pioneer in creating a unique style of abstract woodblock printmaking during Japan's period of postwar internationalization. He was born as the eldest son of Nihon-ga artist Torao Takahashi in Tokyo and was involved in running a photography studio alongside his father until his teenage years. After the war however, he started studying under Koshiro Onchi and soon started creating experimental abstract woodblock prints. As his artistic career developed, America became the base for his activities in the 60s. International recognition followed. His works are characterized by traditional Japanese scenery motifs expressed in rich colors created from layered printing and bold abstraction. Last year the artist's eldest daughter presented the museum with approximately 500 of the artist's works from the 1940s through the 1990s. 60 selected works will be on display in this exhibition.
