Kouta Kishi
There are numerous Japanese towns that have "yoseba" (sites where day laborers are contracted). Yanaka, Tokyo, Kotobuki-cho, Yokohama, and Kamagasaki, Osaka were particularly large. The artist has lived in "yoseba," commuted to "yoseba" and photographed the residents. Many people have recorded and publicized the human rights and labor issues that these towns have. The artist's reasons for exhibiting his photographs are not from a sense of reasoned righteousness but from his conviction of simple life in these towns with dirty walls and snotty old men. Human interest should start at human wounds. The artist continues to photograph wounds and life that we ignore or hesitate to see in our guarded society.

The series features photographs taken by walking the streets of Arakawa and Taito Wards in Tokyo Prefecture.

Works Exhibited: Approximately 60 framed silver gelatin prints, 279 x 356mm.
