Yoshio Shirakawa x Yoshitaka Mori "Alternative Art" Talk Event

ARCUS Studio
Finished
In recent years, "local" and "regional" art projects have been increasing. This practice has the potential to be meaningful, by shedding light on the meanings of art through an alternative approach and separating art from urbanism and commercialism. However there are some examples that raise the question of whether or not the essence of art are being neglected.

In this forum, Yoshio Shirakawa and Yoshitaka Mori discuss the possibilities of new alternative art in remote areas. The themes to be examined include art in urban and rural areas, art and the economic system, and more. Artist Yoshio Shirakawa has been working on a project entitled "Place, Gunma" since 1933. He also expresses his critical standpoints in his publications such as "Art, Market, the Local Currency" (2001, Suisei-sha), "Art, Minority, Practice" (2005, Suisei-sha), "Art, Memory, Life" (2007, Suisei-sha). On the other hand, Mori Yoshitaka has been at the forefront of Japanese cultural studies since the late 90s and "Culture = Politics: Rebellion of Space in the Time of Globalization" (2007, Serika-shobo) and "Pop Music and Capitalism" (2007, Serika-shobo) in particular clearly outlines his agenda in approaching society from a cultural viewpoint. In addition to being a writer and artist, he is also a director of the Kitakyushu International Biennale.

This talk will be in Japanese only.
