Yuzo Saeki + Hanjiro Sano "L'esprit de Paris"

Museum of Modern Art, Hayama
Finished

Artists

Yuzo Saeki, Hanjiro Sano
Painter Yuzo Saeki (1898-1928) and Hanjiro Sano (1900-1987) were both born and grew up in Osaka. Saeki is known for his sometimes aggressive and sometimes lyrical brush strokes depicting downtown Paris. Sano also was greatly influenced by French culture and produced many masterpieces. Texts from posters or walls quite often show up in their paintings of scenes in Paris. Here, those texts are not simply reproduced on canvases as written words, but rather they are on the verge of becoming a part of painting and playing a huge role in communicating something.

It is obvious in Saeki's and Sano's paintings that they attribute significance to applying text, treating it almost as imagery. This exhibition looks for the reasons behind such creative expressions. In addition, from a wider point of view, this exhibition aims to show the close relationship of modern Japanese oil painting to text and literature, crossing boundaries between different artistic genres.
